MacBlack Timber

Whanganui-based timber millers and timber specialists

Natural timber for floors and walls

Finding timber flooring with genuine character isn't easy when most suppliers stock the same standard boards. If you want a particular timber species, profile or finish, you're often forced to compromise before the project even begins.

At MacBlack Timber, solid timber flooring and TGV panelling are milled to spec from around 15 different eucalypts, plus cedar, redwood, poplar and an affordable elm overlay.

Laying over concrete slabs or underfloor heating is workable with the right preparation, and the industry-standard 10% wastage is included in your quote. To talk through species, profiles and grades for your space, get in touch via the

Custom timber flooring and tongue & groove panelling

If a board on the racks stops you in your tracks, it can be profiled into your floor. Almost any suitable timber in the yard can become flooring, so your choice isn't limited to off-the-shelf boards.

The yard holds a wide range of hardwood and exotic species suited to internal flooring, alongside softer timbers like macrocarpa for baches. For a more cost-effective hardwood floor, we offer a 12mm overlay in any of our species, giving the look and feel of solid timber with added stability and strength.

Boards come from the wider range of
rough-sawn timber milled on site.

Flooring is made to order, carefully kiln dried and prepared to minimise movement once installed.

We recommend allowing your flooring to acclimatise in the room before installation, giving the timber time to adjust to its new environment and reducing the risk of movement.

Many customers pair flooring with matching
timber benchtops from the same species run.

TGV panelling, wall linings and sauna timbers

TGV panelling and TG flooring are essentially the same product with a different profile, both run in-house. Wood panelling adds texture to a feature wall, hallway or whole living space.

Because panelling is designed with expansion gaps and everything leaves the mill properly air-dried, natural wall linings can usually be installed straight onto the wall.

For wet zones and saunas, purpose-suited species are stocked:
  • Cedar panelling: a classic sauna choice, stable and aromatic
  • Redwood panelling: another popular sauna lining
  • Poplar: hypoallergenic, used for sauna seating, as it releases no skin-irritating resins when heated
Timber cladding and matching interior linings can be run alongside solid timber doors from the joinery workshop.

One workshop for cladding, trims and finishing details

Because we profile our timber in house, your flooring, panelling, cladding and matching trims can all come from the same workshop. Matching transition strips and skirting boards help create a consistent finish throughout your project, giving every space a natural, cohesive look.

For exterior applications, our locally grown exotic timbers are well suited to New Zealand conditions. Cypresses and eucalypts perform well in strong sun, coastal environments and changing weather, making them an excellent choice for timber cladding and weatherboards.

Every board is sourced through local farm forestry, then milled, dried and inspected by our team before it leaves the yard. Flooring quotes include the industry standard 10% allowance for cutting and wastage, while every board is checked for quality and any showing signs of rot or borer is rejected before it reaches your project.

Frequently Asked Questions for Flooring and Panelling

Yes, both solid and overlay boards can be laid over concrete or underfloor heating with the right prep. A moisture barrier or a batten air-gap system is needed, because slabs weep moisture and redrying timber risks warping.

Around one month is recommended, depending on installer advice, house moisture levels and season. Flooring is run to order rather than held in stock, so allow for that lead time in your build programme.

Solid flooring is a structural 19mm hardwood board. The elm overlay is a thinner board around 12mm thick fixed to a substrate, giving a genuine hardwood floor at a friendlier price point.

Cedar and redwood panelling are classic sauna linings, stable and aromatic. Poplar is used for sauna seating because it is hypoallergenic and does not release the resins that can burn or irritate skin when heated.

No, installation is not carried out on site. The pitfalls of laying, acclimatising and finishing timber flooring can be talked through, but the actual install is handled by your builder or flooring contractor.

Yes, skirting can be run in-house to tie a job together. It will not compete on price with MDF or sheet goods though, particularly when the skirting is getting painted anyway.
